What are election judges?

Election judges are responsible for the administration of election procedures in the voting place on election day.
 
What are some of the duties of election judges?
  • To open and close the polls (judges work from 6 a.m to about 9 p.m.).
  • To be responsible for all election materials.
  • To ensure only qualified voters are permitted to vote.
  • To distribute ballots.
  • To ensure all votes are cast in secret.
  • To help voters requiring assistance.
  • To maintain order in the precinct throughout the day.
  • To certify the precinct election results.
 
Who is eligible?Judges should reside in and be entitled to vote in Duluth. Judges are given a written qualifying test in the City Clerk's office, 330 City Hall. The test can be taken Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
 
Are election judges paid?Yes. The current pay is $8.00 per hour.  Judges may be assigned to work at either, or both, the Primary Election (2nd Tuesday in either August or September, depending on the year) and the General Election (1st Tuesday in November).
 
How are judges selected?Appointments are made by the City Clerk's Office depending on the needs for each election, and approved by the governing body. Duluth has 36 precincts. Each precinct has a voting place staffed by 4 to 6 election judges.
 
How are election judges trained?For new judges there is a two hour training class. Judges are also required to attend a review training class before each election. Judges are paid to attend the class. Classes are held at City Hall.
