AN ORDINANCE DETERMINING THE SUM TO BE RAISED BY TAXATION FOR THE YEAR 2001.

BY COUNCILOR HOGG:

The city of Duluth does ordain:

Section 1. The sum to be raised by taxation for the year 2001 hereby determined to be the sum of $9,658,700, which is levied against the taxable property of the city of Duluth and appropriated to the various accounts of the city set forth in the following sections, via:

Section 2. There will be levied for the support of the general fund the sum of $3,243,100.

Section 3. For the payment of debt, there will be levied for the general obligation debt service fund the sum of $3,663,100.

Section 4. That pursuant to Laws of Minnesota, 1971, Chapter 824, to pay for the portion of the cost of local improvements which will not sustain a special assessment, there will be levied for the permanent improvement fund the sum of $490,000.

Section 5. That pursuant to Minnesota Statutes, Section 469.053 Subd. 4, there will be levied for the purpose of providing funds for the Seaway Port authority fund of the city of Duluth, the sum of $384,900.

Section 6. That pursuant to Minnesota Statutes, Section 458A.51, Subd. 1, there will be levied for transit operations the sum of $1,877,600.

Section 7. That this ordinance shall take effect immediately upon passage and approval.


STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:  This ordinance sets the 2001 levy at the same amount as that proposed by the mayor and established as the maximum levy by the city council at its September 11, 2000, meeting. The levy of $9,658,700 is 9.81% higher than the 2000 levy. The total increase is $863,000 and reflects an increase of $193,800 for the continuing street improvement program, $194,200 for debt service requirements, $135,000 for funding for the comprehensive plan, $100,000 for support for the permanent improvement fund, $140,000 for the DTA, and $100,000 for the Seaway Port authority.
