RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE ACCEPTANCE OF A $13,300 GRANT FROM THE MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF CHILDREN, FAMILIES AND LEARNING TO ASSIST IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SOCCER FIELD AT THE BASE OF THE SPIRIT MOUNTAIN RECREATION AREA.

BY COUNCILOR NESS:

WHEREAS, upon recommendation of the Minnesota amateur sports commission, the Minnesota department of children, families, and learning provides grants to assist political subdivisions of the state of Minnesota for the development of soccer facilities; and

WHEREAS, the city of Duluth desires to construct a full size soccer field at the base of the Spirit Mountain recreation area and has applied for such a grant;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the proper city officers are hereby authorized to accept a grant of $13,300 from the Minnesota department of children, families, and learning to assist in the establishment and construction of a soccer field at the base of the Spirit Mountain recreation area;

RESOLVED FURTHER, that the proper city officers are authorized to execute any and all agreements to implement said grant and that said grant funds shall be deposited in Capital Improvement Fund 450, Agency 015, Org. 2000.



STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: The city of Duluth, AYSA, Fields for Duluth Committee, West Duluth/Denfeld Soccer Association, and the Spirit Mountain recreation area authority desire to collaborate to build a full size soccer field at the base of the Spirit Mountain recreation area in order to reduce the need for soccer field space in the western neighborhoods as well as provide a safe and supervised environment for city youth in a demographically acceptable traveling distance to where they live. This resolution officially accepts a $13,300 grant from the Minnesota amateur sports commission/Minnesota department of children, families, and learning for the development of this soccer field. The total cost of the field is estimated at $57,100.
