RESOLUTION ACCEPTING UP TO $392,100 UNDER THE MINNESOTA CRIME ACT OF 1999 AND MINNESOTA STATUTE SECTION 299A.66, CRIMINAL GANG STRIKE FORCE MEMBER REPLACEMENT GRANT FOR REIMBURSEMENT OF PERSONNEL COSTS; GRANT PERIOD IS FROM JULY 1, 2001, TO JUNE 30, 2003.

BY COUNCILOR STOVER:

        RESOLVED, that the city is hereby authorized to accept grant monies up to $392,100 from the Minnesota department of public safety for expenditures related to the Criminal Gang Strike Force member replacement grant. The St. Louis County sheriff's department as a partner agency is also authorized reimbursements related to this grant.

        BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the proper city officials are hereby authorized to execute such agreements as necessary to implement the project on behalf of the police department. All grant proceeds are to be deposited in Police Grant Fund 0215-200-2462-4230.


STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: The Duluth police department has applied for continued funding for the Minnesota Gang Strike Force-Northeast Office (MGSF-NE), a collaborative effort of the city of Duluth, St. Louis County sheriff's office and Minnesota bureau of criminal apprehension to combat gangs and gang activity in the northeast region of Minnesota. The Criminal Gang Strike Force member application and member replacement grant covers approximately 75 percent of the salaries and benefits of MGSF members. The city has received funding for this program since January 1998.
