BY COUNCILOR REINERT:
WHEREAS, schools are important to the foundation of neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, the city and many organizations have invested heavily to increase home ownership and create neighborhoods of choice; and
WHEREAS, school closings have a direct impact on neighborhood stability, resident make-up and have significant implications for municipal land use planning.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the city council requests that the board of ISD No. 709 hold a joint meeting with the city council to discuss their interest in the effects of a school closing.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the city council of Duluth requests the board of ISD No. 709 to delay making any decision on closing any school until after completion of the joint meeting.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: This resolution asks the school district to delay school closings and discuss the matter with the council.
