BY COUNCILOR LITTLE:
WHEREAS, the city of Duluth has participated in the Lake Superior drug task force and desires to continue such participation;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the proper city officers are authorized and directed to enter into a joint powers agreement with the city of Hermantown, Minnesota, and the city of Superior, Wisconsin, providing for the participation by the city of Duluth and other above-named governmental agencies in the Lake Superior drug task force through December 31, 2005; agreement to be substantially in the form of Public Document No. __________ on file in the office of the city clerk.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: This resolution authorizes the proper city officials to
execute an agreement to participate in the Lake Superior drug task force. The city has participated in this organization with success since 1990. The governments participating in this task force have changed so that the unit is eligible for federal grant funds provided under the Edward Byrne memorial grant program, a federal formula grant program funded by the United States department of justice, bureau of justice assistance, and state and local assistance for narcotics control program. The task force will target felonies that have the likelihood of being related to the distribution of narcotics and/or other cases that have a multi-jurisdictional impact.
The on-going participation by the city will enable the city to engage in an area-wide and coordinated drug enforcement effort. The task force is funded with grant monies.
