RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE FREE CONVEYANCE OF 435 ACRES OF TAX FORFEITED LAND FOR MUNICIPAL, PUBLIC RECREATION AND TRAIL PURPOSES LOCATED SOUTH OF THE PIEDMONT NEIGHBORHOOD AND NORTHWEST OF SKYLINE PARKWAY AND EAST OF HAINES ROAD (PIEDMONT SKI TRAILS).

     RESOLVED, that the Saint Louis County Board of Commissioners is hereby requested to free convey to the city of Duluth the following tax forfeited parcels for municipal, public recreation and trail purposes.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:  This free conveyance of 435 acres of tax-forfeited land to the city is a public-to-public transfer; therefore, there is no tax base impact at this time. In addition, the land will not be available to join the tax base in the future.

 

This resolution requests that the Saint Louis County Board of Commissioners free-convey the described tax forfeited land for municipal, public recreation and trail purposes. This area has been used for many years by the public as a City-maintained cross country ski trail area, by snowmobilers on the Duluth Cross-City Snowmobile Trail, and most recently by the Superior Hiking Trail. Additionally, the area is the headwaters for Merritt Creek and has many rock outcrops with scenic vistas of the harbor.

 

This request was reviewed by the city planning commission at its regular meeting of February 14, 2006. The commissioners voted unanimously to recommend that the city council request the free conveyance of this property to the city of Duluth.
