BY COUNCILORS NESS AND GILBERT:
The city council finds as follows:
(a) All Minnesotans, adults, children and teenagers, have the right to be safe at home, at school and in their communities;
(b) Those who own or sell guns have a responsibility to make them inaccessible to those who would not or cannot use them responsibly;
(c) Concerned citizens have shown the council that current Minnesota laws have made it too easy for prohibited buyers, including teens, to illegally obtain handguns on the street, through ads in the newspaper, internet and at gun shows from unlicensed dealers.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the city council requests concerned citizens, elected leaders and involved organizations to:
(a) Promote measures that Minnesotans can take to stop gun injuries and deaths, especially among children and teenagers;
(b) Encourage Minnesotans, especially households with children, to store firearms safely;
Work to prevent illegal access to guns:
(c) Require background checks for all gun sales and transfers. No exceptions, no excuses;
(d) Identify the sources of crime guns and stop any illegal trafficking of guns in our communities.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: This resolution sets out the council’s call for action in the important area of firearm safety.
