Recreational Fires Within City Limits

To help curb the number of illegal fires, help eliminate safety hazards, and address objectionable smoke to neighbors, the following rules MUST be followed. Noncompliance may result in a citation.

Fires that follow the rules outlined below are legal and no permits are required.

  • Recreational fires cannot be located within 25 feet of a structure (including decks and fences) unless they are in an approved container designed for this purpose.
  • Manufactured fire pits must be 10 feet away from all structures and combustibles.
  • Any condition that could cause a fire to spread within 25 feet of a structure needs to be eliminated before lighting the fire.
  • The fire CANNOT exceed three feet in diameter or two feet in height.
  • The only approved burning material is clean dry wood. The burning of leaves, garbage, newspapers, etc. is prohibited due to offensive or objectionable smoke generated.
  • Fire generating objectionable smoke will be extinguished by the fire department.
  • Recreation fires must be constantly attended until the fires is extinguished.
  • A fire extinguisher or garden hose must be available for immediate use and the fire must be completely extinguished when done enjoying it.

What may be enjoyable for you may not be enjoyable for your neighbors. Be a good neighbor and do not have  recreational fire on breezy days. The wind can spread smoke through the neighborhood causing neighbor complaints blocks away.

So have fun, roast a few marshmallows, sing a few songs and above all, do it in a safe manner!
