Fire Inspection Services

The Duluth Fire Department enforces the currently adopted edition of the Minnesota State Fire Code. The purpose of the inspection program is to provide life safety in all commercial buildings and familiarize fire suppression personal of building layout and construction features to help when there is a fire. The inspection program requires a visit once every three years to each commercial occupancy to insure the building has been maintained. Our fire inspectors are trained to recognize life safety hazards and know the applicable code to make corrections.

In addition to existing occupancies, we also provide plan review and inspection services to buildings before they are occupied. This has been a valuable tool establishing a relationship with the occupant and educating them on the intent of the code.

The State of Minnesota has adopted the International Fire Code with amendments. There are copies of the Minnesota State Fire Code with amendments in the Duluth Public Library for your review. You can also visit the State Fire Marshals Web Site.
