National Citizen Survey Results

2014 Citizen Survey results are in!
Once again, residents give Duluth high marks and show satisfaction in the general direction the city is heading. Survey results demonstrate improvements in several areas, including 83% of residents polled approving of the city’s overall quality of life. That is the highest result in that category since polling began in 2009, when overall quality of life polled only 68%. The overall image of the city is also at its highest results now at 78%, up from 58% in 2009. 85% of residents say Duluth is a great place to live, up from 78% in 2009.
Results also show improvements in several key areas including overall public safety, access to recreational opportunities, traffic flow in the city, and ease of travel by bicycle. Availability of affordable housing and condition of city streets remain areas with lower results, and remain high priorities for Mayor Ness and other city leaders. 
The overall direction the city is heading shows a significant positive shift over the last few years. When the survey began in 2009, only 33% of residents polled approved of the overall direction of the city. In 2014, 68% of those polled approved the direction of the City – more than double the number from 2009.
Mayor Ness maintains a high approval rating at 89%, as the City Council approval rating also improved to 72%. Three customized questions focused on improvements along the St. Louis River Corridor. Residents expressed support for proposals to enhance neighborhood parks, hiking and biking trails, and access to the St. Louis River. In addition, resident show support for improvements at the Lake Superior Zoo.
