Future Use of Duluth Public Schools Closing in the Next Few Years
Independent School District (ISD) 709 has completed its Long Range Facilities Plan. The Plan calls for closing six schools. All of the Duluth Public Schools are currently shown on the Comprehensive Plan - Future Land Use Map as institutional uses.
In preparation for the closing of these schools, the Planning Division is working to determine an appropriate new land use designation for each of these school sites. That is, once the schools close, what new uses should be allowed? Apartments? Commercial development? Public involvement is a key part of determining this future use.
Central High School
On November 16, citizens attended a community input meeting regarding future land use of the former Central High School. The next step in the process is for the Community Development and Planning Offices to present the proposed recommendation for future land use at the former school site to the public. This recommendation is based on public input from the November 16 meeting and other resources. This meeting to present the recommendation is scheduled for Wednesday, December 14 at 7:00 p.m. in Room 303 of Duluth City Hall. Following that is a public hearing on the proposed change which is be considered by the Duluth Planning Commission at a public hearing on January 10, 2012 at 5:00 pm. At this meeting the public will be encouraged to provide input on the proposed change.
