Public meeting on two way conversion of 12th and 14th Ave East
The City of Duluth Engineering division invites the public to a meeting to discuss the conversion of 12th Ave and 14th Ave East from one way routes to allow for two way traffic. The meeting will take place on Thursday, May 27, 2010 at in the FirstLutheranChurch parish hall. The proposal is to convert both avenues to two way streets fromLondon Road to 4th Street.City staff will make a presentation and address questions from the public.
“This conversion will be a significant benefit to the East Hillside neighborhood and Plaza business district.Providing two way traffic on both avenues will improve traffic flow and access to local businesses in the area. With support from the community and the Council, we hope to complete this conversion yet this summer,” said Mayor Don Ness.
The two avenues served as the old trunk highway 61 routes through Duluth, and once I-35 was constructed to 26th Ave East, the need to carry large volumes of traffic on these corridors no longer existed. These routes were part of extensive studies conducted for the Endion/East Hillside neighborhood which recommended that the avenues be converted from one way to two way routes. By converting 12th and 14th Avenue East, they will be more aligned with current traffic patterns, increase walkability, and provide more of a neighborhood feel. This change would also alleviate circuitous travel for both the residents and businesses in this area.
