Wastewater Treatment Charges/Rate Study
Wastewater Treatment Charges
The charges levied to the City by the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District treatment facility for wastewater treatment are passed on to the sewer utility customers as part of their sewer utility bill. A rate class structure developed in the 1970's is used to determine the level of charges.
Wastewater Rate Study
During the summer of 2001-2 wastewater sampling was performed at sites throughout the city to determine individual customer loadings. The results of these studies and recommendations were presented to the Council in the fall of 2002. In 2003, the City began a program informing commercial customers of a potential change in their rates to reflect their contribution to the concentration of the waste load. As a result many of these customers have taken action to reduce their waste load. They have increased recycling, in particular taking advantage of the WLSSD food recycling program. Annual sampling and analysis will determine future rate adjustments.
